Mazatlan

Mazatlan offers a taste of Mexico with all the variety the country has to offer.  This is the port for people who love the outdoor life.  It is also a bustling city which caters to the tourists.  The ship docks in the industrial part of the city and it is several miles to the good beaches and shopping.  The U.S. dollar is accepted everywhere.  Taxis are available at the pier.  They are metered, but there are men in white pants and blue shirts on the pier that will help you find a taxi and tell you what the rate is. Going back to the ship you may wish to take a Pulmonia (open-air car) for about half the price of a taxi.  Bargain the fare!

SIGHTS:  If you want to see this community and the surrounding Sierra Madre Mountains, a shore excursion may be the thing for you.  Or find a few friends, hire a taxi and go at your own pace.  If sightseeing isn’t your thing, head for the beaches or take a three-wheeled horse cart ride to the historic plaza and yellow-towered cathedral.

SHOPPING:  You will find bargains in the colorful Mercado downtown or at the Arts and Crafts Center near the hotels along the beaches. Sea Shell City is nearby and offers an array of items.  You will also find vendors in stalls or walking the streets and beaches.  Don’t forget to buy vanilla in Mexico as it is inexpensive and of excellent quality.

ACTIVITIES:  You may just wish for a day in the sun, so after shopping head for one of the posh hotels and lie by their pool or beach area.  Parasailing is available among other activities.  Mazatlan is the “sport fishing capital of the world”, so if deep sea fishing is your fancy, take advantage of the tour packages available from your ship.

ADMIRALS TIP:  A favorite “spot” for a crazy time is Senor Frog’s-here the music is live and the tables are crowded, sometimes even danced on and the food is good.  If you don’t choose to visit Senor Frog’s, at least tell everyone that you did!   P.S., this is also where you will find the off-duty crew from your ship.  Another idea, find your way to Las Gaviotas Beach and pay a visit to the new hotels that have grown up alongside this lovely stretch of the city.
